Rain, Bring It

Dry Buddy = Happy Buddy
Oh, look at me. I'm so dry and fluffy.
Wet Buddy = Sad Buddy
Mean lady. Please send my picture to the ASPCA
Taking this dog out in the rain has been horrible. Not only do *I* get soaked but Buddy gets all prissy on me and refuses to pee in the rain. Fine, except YOU'RE A DOG and that's what you're supposed to do. Since then, I've been trying to find him the perfect raincoat and let me tell you, it's taken me 10 months to get the right size (b/c he runs away when I come at him with a ruler or tape measure).

Ina's Lemon Yogurt Cake

A while back, I went to French restaurant Bouley with some friends for the prix fixe brunch. At the end of the meal, they surprised us with a whole loaf of lemon poppyseed cake. I nearly squealed with joy!

I went home to cut myself a slice and...it was kinda disappointing. Dry-ish, not lemony, and lacking glaze (maybe this makes it healthier). Since then I've been craving a lemon cake. When I saw Ina's recipe in Barefoot Contessa at Home, I knew I had to try it out ASAP.

Kitten. Meowsers!

Can anyone say TGIF? In the spirit of Halloween and fall "trends," I wanted to share this gem with you:
Cat in the Hood
And it's SOLD OUT! Whaaa? I know, I'm not young and trendy anymore. But am I missing something? Is this not a furry costume piece made into a hat? There was discussion recently among friends about how panda hats are all the rage in San Francisco. But at least that's explainable as a sports trend for fans of SF Giants' Pablo Sandoval.

If I'm gonna get on board with this trend, at least I'd like extra functionality like in this piece:

Happy First Day of Fall!

To mark the end of summer, yesterday was an appropriately a hot day in NYC despite it being pretty cool in the past few weeks. Today, however, marks the first day of fall and more of this:

Yay! I love changing leaves. Every fall I hope to go somewhere so I can see them and you have to time it in the Northeast. And especially since I don't have a yard, I don't have to think about raking leaves. Haha.

Chilly Time for Chili

I was shocked when we came back from our honeymoon how the weather had changed. It was as if we left New York in the summer and came back to fall. The weather and unpacking my wedding gifts (see below) inspired me to make a big ol' pot of chili. Not to mention it was a very rainy night and I felt bad for making a delivery guy deliver my takeout (I know, it's their job but still).
Yay, Le Creuset!
I first found a very simple chili recipe in Real Simple a couple years ago. I have since kept the template and made it with whatever herbs and leftover veggies in the fridge.

Quick note - this isn't a fancy chili recipe. It's just something I make fast when I get a hankering for tomato sauce, meat, and beans. For a recipe with more complex flavors, check out lavenderpug's tomatillo chili here.

Sephora $5 Weekly Specials: UPDATE

Right after I wrote my post on Sephora cravings, I saw this:
NARS Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment, $25
I want it.

Sephora $5 Weekly Specials

I love trips to Sephora but they are T-R-O-U-B-L-E. It always starts with a list of "must buys" to replenish my Bliss Foaming Face Wash or Philosophy Hope in a Jar. But somehow a 20-something dollar NARS lipgloss always sneaks in.

Recently, I found a deal that will satisfy that need for something extra but without the guilt afterwards. Enter Sephora's Weekly Specials. Not sure when this started but I just saw it last week and picked up one of these for $5:

Smashbox Jet set waterproof eyeliner
$5 for a $22 value! How can you beat that?

Shut the Front Door.

I have an unhealthy habit of watching Bravo TV shows. Including the fashion-obsessed Rachel Zoe Project. More on that another day but today I found this jacket in J.Crew's October catalog:
Stadium-cloth peacoat with gold buttons
I like it. But do I love it? It's super preppy and has a retro gold button detail. Not to mention how in love I am with navy. J.Crew's stadium cloth is pretty durable and doesn't get nubby-looking like other wool fabrics.  But back to the title of the post.

Take A Self-Photo With Your Honey

Do you like to take self-photos? Do you sometimes accidentally cut out a person in the picture? I'm not a fan of always asking a stranger to step in as my photographer, not to mention, it's kinda fun to do your own.  I used to take very bad self pics and it's never fun to have to redo it a bunch of times. The moment gets lost.

After many vacations, the Mr. and I finally figured out how to take a good self picture while we were in Venice, Italy. We've used this method ever since and haven't looked back!

Step 1: Pick a Holder and a Poser. Holder holds (duh) the camera at arm's length for the shot. The Poser poses all parties for the pic.
Ignore the red leash. There's a Buddy attached.

Farm Truck?

In my little neighborhood of Battery Park, we don't often (ever?) see New York-y things like food trucks, etc. But this morning on my walk with Buddy we passed this truck. It's a farmer's market gone food truck.

With further digging, I found out Holton Farms is part of a CSA (community supported agriculture) program and Battery Park is one of their pick-up points for their members. From the web site, here's how I gather a CSA works:

J.Crew Factory: Now Online

In the recent trend of limited time only boutiques (Gilt Groupe, Rue La La), J.Crew's decided to go outlet online starting midnight Friday until 11:59 pm Sunday. It's a novel idea for a store like J.Crew. I'm especially intrigued since in the past few years they really focused on becoming a premium retailer with higher prices and limited edition or partnering with other brands on J.Crew exclusive items.

Ina's Peach & Blueberry Crumbles

Alright, let's not get started on my love/hate with the Barefoot Contessa. I watch her show reruns every Sunday morning with a giant cup of coffee wishing I could be part of just one of her dinner parties (or at least eat the leftovers hiding behind the couch, who wouldn't want that?)

Recently, I got 2 of her cookbooks, Barefoot Contessa At Home and Barefoot Contessa Back to Basics, as gifts. The first recipe I tried was from At Home - Peach & Blueberry Crumbles. You can print the recipe there and below is my experience making this humble crumble.

Weaknesses

I'm generally a fan of salty v. sweet treats. Except for one major weakness...

Ice cream.

Smooth, cold, creamy. Love it! Ice cream was always a treat growing up and it didn't help that my dad also loves ice cream. He reminisces about saving money as a poor college student with his roommates - eating rice and spam for dinner every night just so they could splurge on a half gallon of ice cream at the end of the week. I guess it's in my blood.

I Wuv My Doggie

I talk to my dog in baby voice.

This goes against everything the authority on all things dog Cesar Milan says to do. Exercise, discipline, then affection. THAT'S IT.

Mostly it's *attempts* at affection in my house. I try to snuggle this guy, but all he wants to do is lie by himself with New Cow (Old Cow literally got the stuffing beat out of it). New Cow is from Petco and claims to be 3x stronger. We'll see.

Hehe. I'm a mean mommy. This is what I did during late nights during the pre-wedding week.
