Good Eats SF: Off the Grid

Friday night, we checked out casual eats at the roaming food truck fair Off the Grid. We went to the Fort Mason location by the Marina.

We arrived at 6:30 pm during the primetime rush. The Fort Mason outpost had about 20 vendors, a handful with physical carts. The middle area was separated off for a makeshift bar, band, and chairs for sitting while the outside of the circle housed all the stands and trucks.

With few organized lines, we crammed ourselves in for a walk. Each stand had its own chaotic line except Chairman Bao which had the LONGEST roped off line.

For 3 people, we ended up spending $48 with the most expensive being the ramen bowls:
  • Onigilly Japanese rice balls wrapped in seaweed in miso tuna and teriyaki chicken
  • Hapa Ramen slow cooked pork ramen bowl
  • Senor Sisig filipino chicken tacos and nachos
Unfortunately my pics turned out too dark since it was a night event. Here are photos from the vendors' websites and Yelp! to give you an idea. I can attest that they look about the same in the dark except the ramen bowls were paper.

Everything was delicious. My favorite was the Onigilly rice balls. They were made-to-order, flavorful with the meat mixed into the rice wrapped with nori on the outside. Hapa Ramen had tasty broth and fresh noodles but the biggest bummer was that they ran out of pork belly for their pork ramen. We added a soft boiled egg instead which was added raw and cooks in the hot broth. Senor Sisig tacos were delish in corn tortillas. We went back for dessert from the Creme Brulee Cart but they were sold out!

This was a fun event to experience on a warm fall evening, sitting in the parking lot, under the street lamps. Even the littlest of my dining party enjoyed it!

Off the Grid opened for the summer and is closing soon (or already closed?). If you're in the Bay area next season, check it out!
